Government agencies from all around the world keep releasing statements about food security. For richer nations, this seems to actually mean a ready supply of underpriced produce (of which a large proportion seems to get wasted anyway.) For poorer countries, this is more about selling too much of their harvests, leaving their people to go hungry.

Yet what seems to be common in all these statements is the use of the word “technology” as a means to solve the problem. Surely, only the utterly stupid would fail to interpret agricultural “technology” as “genetically modified crops.” Indeed, in the UK last week at the Oxford Farming Conference, Hilary Benn (DEFRA) said “Food security is as important to this country’s future wellbeing – and the world’s – as energy security. We need to produce more food. We need to do it sustainably.” Professor John Beddington then followed on with new calls for extending the use of GM crops to increase production.

Of course, nobody has produced any evidence to show that GM crops produce higher yields. In fact, an independent study concluded that yields of GM soya were lower than non-GM soya. The EU also commissioned a report that showed an increase in production in only one out of three sites – and went on to describe the results as “mixed.”

On top of this, a new study has provided an evidential link between GM corn and organ failure in mammals. The organ failures seem to be broadly due to pesticide residues in the crops. So in short, the GM corn has been modified to resist the pesticides, but people (or rats as in the study) eating the corn haven’t.

Which leads neatly onto another issue. The Roundup Ready Technology (there’s that word again) brand from Monsanto is a range of GM crop seeds that are tolerant to Roundup herbicide. So, along comes Mr Farmer, sows his GM crops and liberally sprays with Roundup to keep the weeds under control. Unfortunately, contrary to Monsanto’s advertising¹, Roundup stays active in soil for up to 2 years, so nothing other than GM crops will grow in that soil.

So, to the likes of Hilary Benn, I say this: Find some new technology, because a mountain of toxic produce is not going make your food supply more secure.

I ministri dei governi di tutto il mondo continuamente rilasciano dichiarazioni sulla sicurezza della fornitura alimentare.  Per i paesi ricchi, in realtà sembra significare una fornitura abbondante di cibo sotto prezzo (una grande parte del quale viene sprecata lo stesso.)  Per i paesi poveri, le dichiarazioni sono fatti perché i loro governi hanno venduto troppo del loro raccolto, abbandonando i loro popoli alla fame.

Eppure tutto quello che le dichiarazioni sembrano avere in comune é che usano la parola “tecnologia” come un modo di risolvere il problema.  Certamente, soltanto gli scemi fallirebbero di interpretare “la tecnologia agronoma” come “piantagone di organismo geneticamente modificato (OGM.)”  Infatti, nella Gran Bretagna la settimana scorsa ad una conferenza, Hilary Benn (il ministro delle Politiche Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali) ha detto “La sicurezza della fornitura alimentare é importante quanto la sicurezza della energia, per lo stato di benessere di questo paese, e il mondo.  Dobbiamo produrre più cibo. Dobbiamo farlo sostenibilmente.”  Inseguito Prof. John Beddington ha ribaditto l’importanza di ampliare i raccolti OGM per l’aumento della produzione.

Naturalmente, nessuno ha prodotto alcuna prova per dimostrare che i raccolti OGM producono meglio.  Infatti, uno studio indipendente ha concluso che la soia GM produce meno della soia normale. La UE ha commissionato un rapporto ufficiale che ha mostrato un aumento di produzione in solo uno dei tre campi OGM – e poi, hanno descritto i risultati “insignificanti.”

Per di più, un nuovo studio ha prodotto un collegamento tra i prodotti OGM e le malattie gravi nei mammiferi.  I fallimenti degli organi sebrano dovuti all’erbicida e pesticida che rimangono nelle piante. In breve, il granturco si é modificato per resistere i chimici ma la gente (o i ratti come lo studio) che lo mangia é vulnerabile.

Questo conduce ad una altra cosa. Il marchio “Roundup Ready Technology” (non é disponibile in italia :-) ) di Monsanto é un assortimento di sementi che tollerano l’erbicida Roundup. Così, arriva l’agricoltore per seminare il campo, e per tutta la stagione lui spruzza l’erbicida per sopprimere l’erba.  Purtroppo, Monsanto ha mentito nelle loro pubblicità, e Roundup rimane nella terra fino a due anni, così niente al di fuori dei raccolti OGM di Monsanto si coltiveranno in quel campo.

Così, alla gente come Hilary Benn, dico: Trova una tecnologia nuova, perchè un sacco di raccolti velenosi non proteggeranno la tua fornitura alimentare.
