So that’s another Christmas/New Year break out of the way. A week of lazing about and eating too much is always a good opportunity to assess progress from last year, and consider what life will be like next winter.

Personally, next Christmas will hopefully see us with a new bathroom, and a conservatory in place, which will make life much more comfortable. The conservatory (which is a bit of a grandiose term for a big porch) will provide an extra degree of insulation for our front room. The extension of the bathroom is an opportunity to finally sort out the niggles with the heating and hot water systems – as well as the construction of a bath.

In 2009, we took a conscious decision to only grow staple/low maintenance crops, but this year I will be spending more time on the vegetable plot. I would like to have a polytunnel in place by the end of summer, especially since talking to a stallholder in the market this morning who was selling fresh tomatoes grown in his polytunnel. To date, my search for a garden-sized polytunnel kit has only elicited responses ranging from “Yes, €2,000 will get you a 10m by 75m frame” to the somewhat leftfield “Why would you want one of those, when there are weeds to eat in winter?” (Yes, I understand your point, but I like aubergines and fresh tomatoes in winter.)

We have every intention of getting a couple of goats this year too. The goat house is nearly finished, but I need to build a little covered yard for them when it is raining, and ideally a fenced paddock area. Then only two hurdles will remain – sorting out some form of milking parlour, and paying for them.

The only other major project that we have planned for 2010 is for me to build a pergola in front of the house. It would be great to have a pleasant space to sit and eat in summer. The canopy will take a few years to grow (vines, and other climbing plants) but if we don’t get started it’ll never get finished.

Così, ancora un Natale e un Capodanno sono passati. Una settimana oziando e mangiando troppo, é sempre un’opportunità di valutare il progresso dall’anno scorso, e di considerare come andranno le nostre vite l’inverno prossimo.

Personalmente, il Natale prossimo, speriamo, avremo un nuovo bagno, e la veranda sarà chiusa da vetrate, cosa che farà la vita molto più comoda. La veranda (il termine é troppo grandioso per un grande portico) provvederà a un livello supplementare di isolamento per il nostro salone. I lavori di ampliamento del bagno saranno un’opportunità per risolvere finalmente i piccoli difetti dell’impianto di riscaldamento – assieme alla costruzione della vasca.

Nel duemillanove, abbiamo fatto una decisione deliberata di coltivare soltanto i raccolti principali, però quest’anno passerò più tempo nel orto. Vorrei costruire una serra in plastica entro la fine dell’estate, particolarmente dopo aver parlato con un fruttivendolo nel mercato stamattina, che vendeva i pomodori freschi dalla sua serra. Fino ad oggi, le risposte della mia ricerca per una serra a nisura per il giardino sono iniziate con un “Si. Un telaio di 10m per 75m verrebbe €2,000″ finendo con uno strano “Perché vuoi una di quella, quando puoi mangiare le erbaccie in inverno?” (Si, vedo il senso, ma le melanzane e i pomodori mi piacciono in inverno.)

Abbiamo tutta l’intenzione di comprare un paio di capre quest’anno. La gabbia é quasi finita, e devo costruire un piccolo cortile con un tetto per loro quando piove, e un recinto. Poi rimarranno solo due ostacoli – una mungitrice, e il costo delle capre.

L’ultimo grande progetto che abbiamo pianificato per il 2010 é una pergola di fronte a casa. Sarebbe bellissimo avere un posto per sedere e mangiare in estate. Per il baldacchino ci vorranno alcuni anni per fare crescere le viti e le altre piante rampicanti) peró se non cominciamo, non finiamo.
